The recent episode of “PTRLeaks” has sparked a debate in Tamil Nadu about whether someone’s voice can be cloned completely using AI. Annamalai and his team claim it is PTR’s voice and though it has not been explicitly denied, team DMK is claiming it is a cloned voice. Voice experts can prove the veracity of it.
However, for common people, it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern whether someone’s voice is their own or is generated by sophisticated technology.
Recently, the case of a mom in Arizona, who went to the police because her daughter was kidnapped and a ransom was demanded, became viral.
It was found that the daughter was actually safe and what the lady heard over her phone was a cloned voice of her daughter with the kidnapping & ransom demand.
The lady was sure it was her daughter but the Feds found that the technology is fairly sophisticated now to fool the common man. It’s not just the mom but the girl’s sister also got fooled by the voice & crying they heard over the phone.
US federal officials are warning that such schemes are getting more and more sophisticated with one thing in common: cloned voices. Researchers are saying that with the help of AI software, voice cloning can be done for as little as $5 a month, making it easily accessible to anyone.
It is unfortunate that such a wonderful technology that can change lives for the better for millions of children around the world when put into education, is being used for such nefarious purposes.
Conscious Life choices are the only way forward. But till we get to a fully Conscious Planet, let’s be aware of such possibilities and spread this message to people you know.
