China’s Digital Silk Road
The Silk Road was a network of Eurasian trade routes active from the 2nd century BCE until the mid-15th century. Spanning over 4,000 miles, it played a central role in facilitating economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between the East and West.
The #SilkRoad derives its name from the highly lucrative trade of silk textiles that were produced almost exclusively in #China. Now, China is again looking to (exclusively) control the World’s #trade and #commerce through a concept called the “Digital Silk Road” or DSR.
The “Digital Silk Road” (DSR) was introduced in 2015 by an official Chinese government white paper. Beijing has an initiative called the Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and DSR is a part of that to claim China’s dominance in World Trade.
On the face of it, DSR is about promoting technology cheaply and quickly — like AI, Blockchain, Quantum Computing, etc. In reality, it is just China’s agenda to dominate participation in the creation and setting up of all types of digital infrastructure around the world.
Through DSR, China wants to have virtually any telecommunications or data-related or IT business operations or product sales by Chinese tech firms across continents. It is not just about how the networks are built, but also about what & how standards are set for these networks.
For example, if the standards set by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are aligned with the proprietary technologies used by Chinese suppliers, then the path to digital dominance by China is paved clear. This trend will increasingly be seen in many other areas too.
Private product manufacturers in China may or may not receive Government funding through DSR directly but they still vie for global dominance in the hopes of receiving favors from the Chinese government. Some projects are directly (Chinese) state-sponsored though.
In the coming days, we can see more dominance by #Chinese product vendors in the following areas through this #DigitalSilkRoad initiative:
- #5G and Futuristic Mobile networks
- #ArtificialIntelligence applications
- #Blockchain and #Cloud Services
