Scorching hot Mercury might be the real diamond king! New research suggests this tiny planet harbors a secret — an 11-mile-thick layer of diamond nestled between its core and mantle.

Scientists believe the intense heat and pressure within Mercury squeezed the planet’s once-molten core, crystallizing carbon into a dazzling diamond layer. The presence of a diamond layer could explain Mercury’s surprising density.

Diamonds are incredibly dense, and this hidden layer could contribute to the planet’s heavy core. This discovery about Mercury might shed light on the formation of other planets in our solar system, especially those that endured extreme heat and pressure during their early stages.

But it cannot be mined yet (thankfully!!): Visiting Mercury is a fiery affair, with temperatures reaching a scorching 800°F (430°C) during the day. Even the coolest spots are still hot enough to melt lead.

Mercury might be the smallest planet, but it’s packed with surprises. This hidden diamond layer is a testament to the fascinating and sometimes strange wonders lurking in our solar system.
