Over-powering Your Phone

Many people leave their phones on charge overnight and there are several theories based on this, like:

- Phone battery will die faster if we leave the like that

- It will cause a fire if the phone overcharges through the night, etc.

So, what is the truth?

One thing is generally phone batteries become weaker if they are constantly exposed to excess heat. So, if people leave their phones on overnight charge but instead of keeping them in the open, covering them with a pillow, etc. it can indeed cause a lot of heat and damage the battery.

Then there is the theory that you must discharge the phone battery significantly before charging it again, you are thinking of an entirely different battery. Most phones have lithium-ion batteries which lose capacity with each charge cycle, but the effect is negligible.

These days, most smartphone operating systems have become smart enough to detect the phone is on charge for a long time and they gradually reduce the amount of current as the phone charges up. So, most recent phones don’t have any battery problems.

Some tips to have good battery life on your phones,

- Keep your screen turned off when not in use

- Reduce screen brightness as you need it

- Use standard power adapters and not the cheapest ones available

- Turn off keyboard vibration if you don’t need it

Of course, over years, any battery will slowly lose its capacity to retain charge and phone batteries will have to be replaced after a few years but it does not become so just because of leaving the phone on charge overnight.
